A Medalcraft Mint Company

History of the Medallic Art Company

The Deitsch brothers sent Henri to Paris to investigate, and it was there he discovered the best of these reducing machines were being made by Victor Janvier. Janvier was a master mechanic who had patented a pantograph die-cutting machine in 1899.

His employers instructed Henri to purchase one of the machines and to stay in Paris for as long as necessary to learn every detail of the machine’s operation.

Henri returned to New York and set up the Janvier machine in the Deitsch Brothers building. Since the company had no striking equipment, a nearby Swiss firm was contracted to strike the ornaments from the dies Henri produced on the Janvier machine. The finished cost was far cheaper than the their previous ways of manufacturing the ornamentation.

But, as often happens, fashions soon changed, and handbag styles no longer included metal ornaments of this kind.
